New Ownership for The Otherland Estate

Dear Otherlanders,

Today I have to inform you about some recent developments on the business side of The Otherland Estate.

As some of you will have realized, the time I could spend inworld has become less and less in the past months. This was not a  deliberate decision, but a necessity. Unfortunately, the economic crisis has hit my new/old company in RL rather hard, lately. It started in January and has become worse since. Nearly all of my energy goes into my RL job these days and what little is left is reserved for my family.

This has lead to a situation where The Otherland Estate is more than I can handle. I simply cannot afford the time to care for the estate in the way that you can rightfully expect it and which is necessary to develop it further.

I thought about this situation often in the last weeks and months. And I came to the only possible conclusion:

I have to give The Otherland Estate into new hands!

There are a few different options to do this. But I wanted to find a way that is best for our existing customers. So, I set out to find another estate, which was able to integrate us and where the estate owners would be willing to keep Otherland intact and honor all existing contracts. The search continued for a little more than a month and a few days ago I came to an agreement with Anshe Chung Studios (ACS), Second Lifes oldest real estate firm (and one of the largest, too).

Letter to Otherlanders - Openspaces and Homesteads

Dear Otherlanders,

I have already told you a few times about Linden Lab's unpleasant ideas about Large Area/low prim land (Openspace regions) and our plans to cope with their intentions. These changes speak of a rather questionable attitude towards theirs customers and the society of Second Life. But we have not much of an alternative to accepting them and make the best of it. We made a lot of calculations in the past weeks and evaluated our options.

Now we have finally reached the point, where we will have to make a few changes to our product - and to The Otherland Estate - to adapt to the new situation in January 2009:

1. There will be a new pricelist, of course
There will be a new Homestead product
2. There will be special reduced prices for existing customers
3. There will be additional migration options for existing customers
4. There will be a few necessary "conversions" of existing regions on The Otherland Estate

(1) NEW PRICELIST

Starting in January, there will be a new price list. We will publish it officially in the next 10 days. But here are the most important changes:

16K sqm (ca. 935 prims) of Large Area/low prim ("Homestead") land will now be 36 US$ or 34 EUR / month

32K sqm (ca. 1870 prims) of Large Area/low prim ("Homestead") land will now be 68 US$ or 65 EUR / month

64K sqm (ca. 3750 prims) of Large Area/low prim ("Homestead") land will now be 124 US$ or 118 EUR / month

Additionally, there is a new product: 1/3 of a full region
21K sqm (ca. 1246 prims) of Large Area/low prim ("Homestead") land will cost you 45 US$ or 43 EUR / month

(2) PRICELIST FOR CURRENT OWNERS

Otherlanders, which already own Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land, will only have to pay reduced prices for at least the first 5 months of 2009:
16K of Large Area/low prim (now "Homestead") land for 34 US$ or 33 EUR / month

32K of Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land for 65 US$ or 63 EUR / month

64K Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land for 118 US$ or 113 EUR / month

Existing customers will actually subscribe to the new prices by creating an "add-on subscription" to their current one. There is no need to cancel the old subscription!

(3) MIGRATION OPTIONS FOR CURRENT OWNERS

We are aware that some of the current owners of Large Area/low prim (Openspace) can not afford the raised prices and reduced avatar limits, which Linden Lab forces upon us. For these customers, we offer the following options:

each owner of 16K Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land can swap to
a   4K parcel (ca. 935 prims) on full prim land         at 24US$ or 23 EUR / month

each owner of 32K Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land can swap to
a   8K parcel (ca. 1870 prims) on full prim land         at 48 US$ or 46 EUR / month
additionally, owners of 32K parcels can choose to move to
a 21K parcel (ca. 1246 prims) on a "Homestead" region         at 45 US$ or 43 EUR / month

each owner of 64K Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land can swap to
a 16K (3750 prims) parcel on full prim land         at 92 US$ or 88 EUR / month

(4) CONVERSION OF OLD OPENSPACE REGIONS

As Large Area/low prim land on what was formerly called "Openspace regions" is in significantly less demand than it was, we will have to convert a few of our current Openspace regions (what Linden Lab calls "Homesteads" these days)  into full prim regions. We prefer to do that with regions which are already empty, of course. In some cases it is unavoidable to convert regions, which are currently occupied by one or more customer(s)  :(

In these cases we have no choice but to ask you about a land swap or - if you prefer this - a migration as outlined in (3). An Otherland Estate Manager will contact you today or tomorrow - before Noon of Thursday, the 4th of December, if your region is affected.

At last we want to apologize deeply and sincerely for any inconvenience this might cause. :( There is simply no other way, to balance cost and earnings and to ensure the continued existence of The Otherland Estate.

As usual: if you have any questions about these changes, please contact an Estate Manager or send me an email to dana@otherland-group.com

Actually, it might be best if you would contact us in any case, if you currently own Large Area/low prim (Openspace) land and tell us about your ideas or decisions. That would help us greatly in getting through this transitional period with a minimum of confusion and inconvenience.

Cheers
Dana

Weather Forecast for The Otherland Estate - Early December 2008

Dear Otherlanders,

The Otherland Weather Forcasting Service has given out a snow storm warning!

The storm will reach the Archipelago in the night of Saturday, Dec. 7th, SL time. We are expecting a thick snow cover on many of the Northern and North Eastern regions of the Archipelago. Mediterranean sims and the Maldives won't be affected.

Long term predictions are indicating a short winter, though. An early Spring is expected to arrive in January. :)

Enjoy!
Dana

p.s.: Those of you who would prefer a longer Winter, please take into account, that there are Otherlanders who don't like snow at all. Those of you, who live in these areas and don't like snow at all, please tolerate this short reign of winter. It is only for a few weeks. :)

Letter to Otherlanders November, 8th 2008: "New" Openspaces prices

Dear Otherlanders,

as we have expected and predicted, Linden Lab stepped back from their plans to raise the prices for what they call Openspace land (what we call Large Area/low prim land) a little. M Linden, Linden Lab's CEO himself, announced, that they will differentiate between light use (VERY low prim) and "Homestead" regions in the future. Light use regions will remain with the price of current Openspaces. Homesteads will become more expensive, with a first price raise in January and a second one in July of 2009.

Sounds great? Wait ...

Unfortunately, if you check the descriptions for "light use" (here), you will see quickly, that this is just a decoy and a shabby example of spin-doctoring PR. They expect people to pay the same amount   they currently pay for a full Openspace for a new type of sim with just 750 prims, limited avatar load and limited script load. Nobody will buy this. This means, that most of our Openspace customers will be living on what Linden Lab calls a "Homestead" in January. You can read about my personal opinion of this business ethic elsewhere (here and here for example).

The monthly prices for Homesteads will be "kind of acceptable", though ... initially. Combined with the fact, that we will accept a reduced margin when calculating our own pricing, this will make it even more reasonable. There are still some open questions, though, which I will try to get answered next week.

So please do take the the following information with a grain of salt. It might still change, if and when Linden Lab releases additional information - or changes their plans again:

For all land which is sold after December 31st, we will probably have to charge some 20% - 25% more per month with existing landowners receiving a rebate.

DRAFT FOR A NEW PRICE LIST "HOMESTEAD" LAND (formerly Large Area/low prim)

New Prices for land owned, not rented on Large Area/low prim land (Homestead land in Linden terms) will probably be as follows

1/1 full region = 65,000sqm: 124 US$/month
1/2 region = 32,000sqm: 68 US$/month
1/4 region = 16,000sqm: 36 US$/month

Prices for existing customers will be

1/1 full region = 65,000sqm: 118 US$/month
1/2 region = 32,000sqm: 65 US$/month
1/4 region = 16,000sqm: 34 US$/month

These reduced prices will be valid for a period of 6 months maximum. We can not afford to keep them longer if we do not want to run the risk of killing our business and watching The Otherland Estate vanish from the Second Life Map. :(

Rental prices will be adjusted accordingly, of course.

ALL quoted prices are still subject to change (but I don't expect much of a change)

We won't buy back Large area/low prim land at our usual rates, currently. We will re-instantiate this option, as soon as the prices for Homestead land have settled on the market. Anything else would be unfair and endanger the existence of The Otherland Estate.

Migration option
But: as of today, landowners on Large area/low prim land will be able again to migrate to other parcels on standard regions (full prim) the Otherland Archipelago at no cost.

1/1 full region entitles you to a move to a parcel (or parcels) of 16,384sqm total size
1/2 region entitles you to a move to a parcel (or parcels) of 8,192sqm total size
1/4 region entitles you to a move to a parcel (or parcels) of 4096sqm total size

Such a parcel which results from a move from Large area/low prim land can be sold to another resident. We won't buy it back at our usual rates, though until the prices for Homestead land have settled on the market (anything else would be unfair).

Dear Otherlanders,

These are "interesting times" :( Please stay with us and let us weather this storm together. It's the only chance to live through it!

Let me finish with a personal thought about what has happened: Actually I don't think that asking a little more for an Openspace region than for 1/4 of a standard region is completely unreasonable. A full Openspace region gives you  4 times the area and the same prim capacity as 1/4 of a standard region. Thats why a premium in relation to the price of 1/4 of a full prim sim could be considered justified. The currrently suggested pricing constitutes a HUGE premium though, and I don't think it is justified - at least not the prices, Linden Lab intends to demand later in the summer of 2009.

I am not only saying this because this price raise hurts our business (it hurts our customers and what hurts our customers hurts us). I am rather certain that Linden Lab will suffer from this decision, too.

Why I do think so? Simple: Openspace regions - especially in the free floating variety - are the product, which most closely resembles what is possible with the OpenSim technology already. (If you don't know about Opensim, please check here: http://www.opensimulator.org/). OpenSim regions and the grids in which they are located, are not ready for primetime, yet ... Thes grids are still slow and buggy. It is not easy to take your (second) wordly posessions from Second Life into these other grids. It is not even easy to take your avatar shape, skin or clothes with you. The economy in these worlds is not working yet, which results in not many products being available there.  All of these worlds are small and they do not have many residents - especially not many residents online concurrently.

All in all: if you are not an enthusiastic builder or a hermit, who is not interested much in meeting other people, parties, shopping or exploring, these grids are not for you.

But this will change within the next 6 - 12 months. They will grow and they will improve.

And then competition will finally arrive. All of these alternative grids will feature substantially lower prices for land. And that at a time when Linden Lab plans for another price raise. I guess we all know what will happen then.

That's why I do not believe, that the prices will be raised again next summer ... the world will have changed until then ... and not in favor of Linden Lab. At the end of the day, their greed will destroy their  leading position in the Metaverse. I am not happy about this - as I have been a huge fan and excited supporter of Second Life from the first moment I discovered this alternate world :(

I still believe in the Dream of Second Life - but not in Linden Lab delivering it anymore. Sometime in 2009 Otherland will expand onto another grid. And - as usual - we will do that in style and with excellent support. We won't "leave" Second Life. But time will tell, where growth is stronger and I am afraid it might be somewhere else. We will be there. And I hope, many of you who like our style and our service will be there, too. :)

Cheers
Dana

Letter to Otherlanders November, 5th 2008 "M Linden on Openspaces"

Dear Otherlanders,

you might have seen, that Linden Lab (M Linden personally) has announced some changes to their outrageous plan with High area/low prim regions. I am still not totally happy with their ideas and their tone of accusing residents. But this seems to be a step in the right direction. I expect more to come ;-)

Please give us a little time to analyze their new ideas. This is still no time for rush decisions. I will tell you about the results of our analysis next weekend. This will still be "preliminary" as many questions are NOT yet answered by Linden Lab and - to be honest - given their past performance I expect some last minutes offers and changes over the next weeks ... Linden Lab is NOT a company where "think before you act" is corporate policy ... it is with The Otherland Group, though ;-)

Cheers
Dana

Letter to Otherlanders October, 31st 2008 "Openspaces Update"

Dear Otherlanders,

this was quite a week after Linden Lab's announcement about planned changes in the pricing of 'Openspace' regions. In my nearly 4 years in SL I have never witnessed such a huge grass roots protest and such a lively (critical) discussion on the forums and blogs.

Please check here for our "official position" on Linden Lab's latest moves.

Judging from what I have read in a few online forums and mailing lists, where Lindens participate, I can only say, that they seem to reconsider a few of their plans, already. It is still too early to do any planning based on that assumption - or on the original announcements, though. Based on past experience I expect some 'final' announcements in the middle of November.

Please be patient while we watch the events unfold. I know this is not easy ... but it simply does not make sense, to make any decisions about our future pricing and overall strategy now ... because we still do not know, what will happen in January.

Yes, I know that some of our competitors are giving up or are thinking about "giving up". This is exactly, what we will not do, here at Otherland. Reacting in panic might be "human nature", but it is not a sensible way to lead a business. In addition, we have a stable business, efficient processes and an good mix in of "standard regions", which will help us weather this storm.

We will wait, till we have clear and dependable information about the future product line of Linden Lab and then we will tell you our strategy. We will do everything possible, to ensure the survival of The Otherland Estate - and we will do it in a way that will deliver the best value for you money like we always did in the past. Otherland is more than a business for me .. it is my baby and my passion.

You can help us to survive through these times, by the way, simply by:

  • not doing anything rush
  • telling your friends what a great environment you enjoy here on The Otherland Estate

Yes, we WILL keep you posted! :)

Cheers
Dana

Letter to Otherlanders October, 28th 2008 "Openspaces"

Dear Otherlanders,

some of you might have read the latest post on Linden Lab's blog about the pricing of what we call "Large area/low prim" sims, which are named "Openspaces" in official Linden Lab lingo.

Actually, Jack Linden announced that they will raise prices on this type of region by some 70% (upfront and monthly) in January of 2009. He cited various reasons with different degrees of plausibility. Nevertheless, this announcement already lead to a considerable amount of uncertainty and confusion in the land market in SL. Some Otherlanders have already contacted me with questions about what this will mean for our (Otherland's) pricing.

I can only answer, that we have not made up ANY plans for price changes and would consider it irresponsible to do that now. (see below.) We are analyzing the situation and the announcement and are awaiting further clarification of the issue from Linden Lab.

I can only urge you to stay calm and wait until "the dust settles" before judging this event. So far, nothing has happened - especially nothing bad. :)

You might have heard it before ("keep calm") but it's actually sound advice, whenever confusion arrises. :) Panic and rush action rarely leads to great results. The current situation in the financial markets of RL is a telling example of that.

Currently, we do not know what will happen, when - and if - those price changes go into effect next year. Linden Lab has a long tradition of announcing stupid decisions and changing them when the community protest becomes too loud.

Additionally, it is hard to foresee what this will mean to land prices in SL. Linden Lab will (might) sell fresh sims at a higher price, which might actually raise the market value of land. The announced tier increases - should they really go into effect - might lead to some people selling off their land, which might compensate that upside effect. It is still too early to decide  ... and Linden Lab will probably change details of their announcements in the coming weeks.

To avoid panic reactions I have to announce that we will not be buying back land or doing land swaps between different kinds of land (standard, full prim and large area, low prim land) for a while until the market has settled and new pricing levels have stabilized. This is only a temporary measure, but a necessary one. Anything else would endanger the very existence of the estate and would be grossly unfair to most residents.

Again: let's keep calm and watch the situation. We will all know more in one or two weeks. I will keep you informed through this channel or our weblog and we will hold a town hall meeting concerning these issues in the first half of November.

Cheers
Dana

Discussion about "themed" regions on the estate

Dear Otherlanders,

As it was announced a week ago, I would like to know your opinions regarding themed regions (New England, Maldives etc. ) and the corresponding theme descriptions. We had an unusually large number of disputes and misunderstandings in the last months with buildings that did not fit our understanding of the theme.

As you probably can imagine, it is no fun at all for us, to tell a customer that his or her dream house, a spectacular rock or giant tree should not be built "there". It is not only unpleasant to do that - it is bad for our business, too We only want happy, satisfied customers, not frustrated ones. That's why I sincerely appreciate any comment or suggestion on how to make our themes more practical and less prone to misunderstandings.
